SUMMARY:Class 302: Ribbon Candy 10 Ways with Susan Smith
DESCRIPTION:Ribbon Candy is a classic quilting motif! Let’s explore manyways to dress it up and personalize it. Your next custom quiltwill thank you! \n\n\n\nYou will be drawing in this class – no sewing. Susan will provide primer paper and pencils. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Smith\n\n\n\nHere’s my story: \n\n\n\nI grew up in northern BC\, Canada\, in a home reminiscent of the pioneer days\, with no electricity or indoor plumbing. Those hard-working\, close knit days shaped my faith and my family\, and they remain at the core of my life today. Summer was for raising chickens by the hundred and growing beans by the bushel\, but long winter evenings were for crafting. I learned to sew and make quilts on a treadle sewing machine alongside my mother. And truly\, I’ve never stopped sewing and creating with fabric since. \n\n\n\nIn 2015\, looking for a faster way to make more quilts\, a friend introduced me to longarm quilting\, and the bug bit! Since then I’ve quilted my way across NICU baby quilts\, cancer comfort quilts\, graduation and wedding celebration quilts (think speed and efficiency – they need to be timely). \n\n\n\nI’ve quilted novice maker quilts\, elderly lady can’t-see-very-well quilts (think bulky seam allowances and wonky borders). I’ve finished vintage treasures (irregular hand stitching\, odd fabrics\, and funky stains\, oh my). All through those 1000+ quilts\, I’ve met and conquered a whole lot of challenges. At one point\, I found myself inspired with a vision of a quilt – and the realization that I didn’t have the skill to create that vision in fabric. That prompted me to dive deeply into HOW we can learn – and learn quickly – and to apply those techniques to learning freehand quilting. \n\n\n\nEvery quilt\, after all\, is an opportunity to learn\, and hone the art of machine quilting.

She has developed a line of revolutionary rulers\, books\, patterns\, and technique for making STRIP PIECED mariner’s compass blocks and projects – that’s right\, NO PAPER PIECING! \n\n\n\nRobin learned to sew in the 70’s at a young age from her mother\, an accomplished garment seamstress\, and it was her grandmother who took her to her first quilt class in 1985. Quilting became one of her favorite creative hobbies that she continued to pursue throughout her life. Robin has a degree in Communications/Public Relations and successfully ran and owned a gift store for 16 years in partnership with her mother. After closing the store and sending her daughter off to college\, Robin refocused her attention on quilting and the original ruler¬ she designed in 1992. \n\n\n\nRobin has become an internationally known quilt teacher and gives classes across the country. She also is a sought-after quilt designer for fabric companies such as FreeSpirit\, Windham\, and Clothworks. Her quilts have been in many shows including International Quilt Festival\, QuiltCon\, and Road to California. She loves to travel and her creative inspiration comes from the art\, architecture\, and nature that she experiences along the way. Her travel and creative designs come together under her ever-popular hashtag #wherewillyourcompasstakeyou as she encourages others to give her rulers a try for their own creative expression. Her products are sold in quilt shops across the U.S. and around the world. \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not on the quilt trail\, you might find Robin on the cattle trail at her family’s cattle ranch near Ritzville\, WA where she and husband\, David\, recently moved back to and built a new home. You might find her out working cattle on her quarter horse\, Major\, or mustang\, Mitey\, or in her new sewing studio dreaming up her next creative project to bring the mariner’s compass into the 21st century!

She moves the quilt and loves creating detailed and intricate quilting designs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\nFollow Cheryl on Instagram

SUMMARY:Class 102: Strip-Pieced Sunflower with Robin Long
DESCRIPTION:Create your very own stunning sunflower garden using Robin Ruth Design’s innovative STRIP-PIECING method and rulers for making this variation on the mariner’s compass block. We’ll work on creating a Fat Robin Sunflower block for your own fabulous garden. Students will learn this raw edge appliqué method for finishing their blocks and I will also give ideas for shaping these flowers into other shapes and embellishing these gardens with other appliqué shapes (including bias stems and shaped leaves). \n\n\n\nSkill Level: Intermediate \n\n\n\nStudents should have experience piecing and be prepared to move along at a fairly quick pace in class. \n\n\n\nFor class you will need the Fat Robin 16-Point Mariner’s Compass Book/Ruler Combo. You can wait until the day of class to purchase your Fat Robin 16-Point Book & Ruler Combo with a 10% discount. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupply List\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClassroom Bernina 475 sewing machines provided by The Quilting Bee \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobin Long\n\n\n\nWhat started as a quest to make a Mariner’s Compass quilt for her submarine officer husband\, Robin Long took an idea she had in 1992 and launched Robin Ruth Design in 2015.

She had never made a quilt block and never appliqued but her love of applique was firmly cemented after that class. \n\n\n\nShe has been a member of Washington State Quilters since around 1999. Her passion is needle turn applique\, wool applique and art quilts. She loves to add embellishments with beading\, embroidery\, trims and other textile items to most (well\, almost all) of her quilts. Even on early quilts\, she added that bit of ‘extra’ with sparkly embroidery thread\, or buttons and beads. \n\n\n\nCheryl also does her own machine quilting on all of her quilts and quilt projects using a Bernina Q20 machine. She moves the quilt and loves creating detailed and intricate quilting designs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollow Cheryl on Instagram
