Jean Impey – Spider Web Quilt

April 26, 2025 @ 9:00 am 4:00 pm

Unlock the magic of the Spider Web quilt, a versatile design that’s been captivating quilters for centuries. Also known as a String Quilt, this block offers endless possibilities—you can make it traditional, modern, or totally liberated, depending on your creative vision. The only limit is your imagination!

We’ll explore the Spider Web’s unique structure, composed of four kite-shaped pieces that form a dazzling star and a stunning, multi-ringed web. Each “kite” or star can be fussy cut or pieced, while the “rings” can vary in color and width, giving you complete control over your design. Whether you stick to a uniform look or mix things up, your quilt will be one-of-a-kind.

You’ll learn:

  • Techniques for Precision and Speed: Start sewing almost immediately and discover methods to improve your accuracy and efficiency.
  • Design Freedom: Create your own visual masterpiece by weaving strips of fabric into a quilt that’s rich in color, texture, and surprise.
  • Rhythmic, Relaxing Quilting: Experience the meditative rhythm of stitches and repetition, creating a piece of art that you’ll cherish forever.

Class Details:

  • Materials: Bring your favorite fabrics—contemporary, modern, traditional, hand-dyes, tonals, batiks, or thimbleberries. The more variety, the better! My first Spider Web quilt featured over 280 different fabrics, not including the crazy pieced kites. For a class project, 6-8 fat quarters are enough to make a stunning pillow. You’ll also need a 22” by WOF fabric and a 22” zipper for the pillow backing (keep the selvages on).
  • Special Ruler Fee: There is a $12 fee for a specialized ruler that will help you achieve perfect precision and ease when creating your Spider Web quilt.

This class is perfect for quilters of all levels who want to have fun, experiment with color and pattern, and take their skills to the next level. By the end, you’ll have a beautiful quilt and a toolbox of new techniques to use on future projects.
